Neo-Impressionist Artist Assumpta Tafari Tafrow,uses the technique of Pointillism(Divisionism) to create the ancient subject matter of Ethiopia and Africa.
The unique style of Ms. Tafari is due to the fact that her work is completely made of layers of tiny dawbs and dots of colour.The Artist uses Ink pigments applied to archival watercolour paper to create her work, building on her technique over the last 20 years. A piece can take from 3 to 6 monthes( largest work one year) to complete,depending on size.The Artist's body of work is a cumulation of more than fifteen(15) years of work.
It is Ms. Tafari's great honor to present her Icons to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in the United States and in Ethiopia.
The Artist cartouche is signed "Tafar",the oldest form of her Paternal surname in Amharic Ethiopian.
Born near New Hope,PA.; Ms.Tafari was greatly influenced by the New Hope Impressionist and the International Impressionist Movements. After her intitial study in Visual Art ,she was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia Pennsylvania);where many of the New Hope Impressionists studied.
Although the Artist did not attend the Academy ,she was deeply moved by thier recognition.
Ms.Tafari apprenticed in Kona, Hawaii with Master Batik and Dye Artists,applying her style to textiles.There she worked and exhibited with local Hawaiin and Polynesian Artists
For the last 20 years she has developed her own unique technique and style of Neo-Impressionistic Pointillism.
The Artist layers very small dawbs of irridescent pigments on Archival Watercolour Paper with a stylus to create her signiture style.
By executing this technique she achieves the final outcome of honoring her subject matter with a heavenly glow.
Artist Tafari has defined her subjects to that of Ethiopia and Africa; with the hope to carry on its cultural heritage. She was honored by the Mamher/High Priest-Teacher of the Ethiopia Orthodox Tewahedo Church and was asked to paint the Ancient Icons of the Church.Her work is included in many collections of the Ethiopian Orthodox Churchin the United States and Ethiopia.
Ms. Tafari's Works on Paper were exhibited in Amsterdam, Netherlands at Shamanisimo Botanica Gallery in the years 1999 -2006.
It is the Artist's special honor to have her Original works collected within the International Ethiopian and Rastafarian communities, for many years.
